Le premier prix pour le dessin d'Assa Badiallo Diarra

Salut à tous,
Après mûre réflexion, le jury (composé de 2 personnes de Muso Ladamunen et de 2 personnes de l'IICD) a décidé d'attribuer le premier prix du concours de logo MAMMA à Assa Badiallo Diarra de Bamako, au Mali.

Quatre critères ont été utilisés pour peser les différentes présentations: l'originalité, le message, le design et l'ergonomie.

Le jury a considéré le dessin Diarra le plus original, et représentant le mieux ce que le projet MAMMA essaie de faire.
La contribution de Diarra peut être difficile à utiliser dans un logo dans sa forme actuelle, mais l'idée est assez forte et mérite d'être davantage élaborée avec l'aide d'un designer professionnel.

En deuxième et troisième places sont venues les contributions d'Adama Ilboudo - dit Arukey du Burkina Faso et de Luc de Ruijter des Pays-Bas avec un nombre égal de points, tout en marquant différemment sur les différents critères. La soumission de Luc a été jugée la contribution la mieux conçue du point de vue design, tandis que celle de la part d'Arukey a recu le plus de points pour le message.

Finalement, comme les différences dans l'évaluation finale étaient minimes, le jury a décidé d'attribuer une clé USB aux trois gagnants ci-nommés.

Hi all,
After careful deliberation, the jury (composed of 2 persons from Muso Ladamunen and 2 persons at IICD) has decided to assign the first price for the MAMMA logo contest to Assa Badiallo Diarra from Bamako, Mali.

Four criteria were used to weigh the different submissions: originality, message, design and usability.

The jury considered Diarra's drawing the most original one, and the message coming closest to what project MAMMA stands for.
Diarra's contribution in its present form may be difficult to use in a logo, but the idea is strong enough and merits to be further worked out with the help of a professional designer.

Second and third contributions by Adama Ilboudo - dit Arukey from Burkina Faso and Luc de Ruijter from the Netherlands received an equal number of points by the jury, though they scored differently on the criteria. Luc's submission was judged as the best-designed contribution of all, while Arukey's scored highest on message.

Le projet MAMMA se met en route

Ici, les choses commencent à se dessiner petit à petit depuis que nous avons commencé le «vrai» travail sur le projet MAMMA à partir de début Décembre.

Une première étape importante a été d'informer les autorités locales et les instances de la santé de nos intentions et d'entendre leurs points de vue sur le projet.
Ainsi, mi-Décembre nous avons eu des réunions avec la Fédération locale des associations de santé ASACO (FELASCOM) de Yirimadjo /Commune 6, et des représentants des ASACO de la commune.
Nous avons eu un débat très intéressant, et tandis que les participants semblent apprécier le projet en général, ils ont soulevé pas mal de questions sur la technologie mobile envisagée et sur la capacité des relais communautaires santé à utiliser cette technologie. Certains nous ont aussi demandé pourquoi nous avons choisi uniquement la zone Yirimadjo pour un projet pilote si utile et intéressant. À la fin de la réunion, le président de la FELASCOM a saisi l'occasion pour nous demander d'envisager la mise en place d'une base de données centralisée qui aiderait la fédération à regrouper toutes les données des ASACOs à Bamako, facilitant ainsi la tâche de la fédération.
Dans les prochaines semaines nous aurons également des réunions avec des représentants de la mairie et du conseil municipal, avec le Centre de Santé CSCOM et bien sûr avec notre équipe d'agents de santé.

Project MAMA now in motion

Hope you're all well!

Here, things are slowly shaping up as from early December on we have started the 'real' work on project MAMA.

A first important step has been to inform the local authorities and Health instances about our plans and to hear their views on the project.
So for instance mid-December we had meetings with the local Federation of Health associations (FELASCOM - "Federation Locale des ASACO-Associations de Santé Communautaires") of Yirimadjo/Commune 6, and representatives of the local ASACO's.
We had a very interesting debate, and while the attendees seemed to appreciate the project in general, they raised questions about the envisioned mobile technology and the capacity of the health workers to use this technology. Some also asked us why we chose only the Yirimadjo area for such a valuable and interesting pilot. By the end of the meeting, the chairman of the FELASCOM used the opportunity to request us to consider the setup of a centralized database which would help the FELASCOM to regroup all data from the local health associations in Bamako, thus facilitating the federation's task to provide feedback to the ASACO's.
In the next weeks we will also have meetings with the local city council, with the Health Centre and of course with our team of health workers.

Deadline voor logo wedstrijd MAMA verlengd tot 25 december!

We hebben al een paar mooie inzendingen, maar je kunt nog altijd je bijdrage opsturen voor het beste logo voor het project 'Mobiles Against Malaria in Mali' - MAMA - van Muso Ladamunen in Yirimadjo (Bamako, Mali) - een ontwerp dat de strijd tegen malaria door middel van de mobiele telefoon goed verbeeldt . Je kunt gebruik maken van een opvallend beeld, een fotocollage, een tekening, een strip, een logo, of een combinatie van deze technieken.

De prijs is vooral symbolisch (een IICD USB-stick) - maar we zullen de winnaar wel in het zonnetje zetten op alle media en sociale netwerken van IICD en Muso Ladamunen.

Concours MAMMA prolongé!

Le concours logo pour le projet ‘MamansMobiles contre le Malaria au Mali’ – MAMMA - de l’association MusoLadamunen a Yirimadjo (Bamako, Mali) a été prolongé jusqu'au 25 décembre.

Désignez un logo ouun cartoon ou une bande dessinée qui représente la lutte contre le pallud en y intégrantla téléphonie mobile. Vous pouvez utiliser une image frappante, un collage, un dessin ou un ensemble de ces techniques. Un brin d’humour, un clin d’œil,un bon métaphore – tout est permis… !

Le prix du concours est surtout symbolique: une clé USB IICD – mais il s'agit surtout de la bonne cause! Et l'auteur/autrice de la contribution choisie bénéficiera bien sur aussi de pas mal de publicité, car nous publierons le résultat sur tous les medias et réseauxsociaux d’IICD et de Muso Ladamunen. Et qui sait, l’image deviendra aussi l’affichedu projet MAMMA.

Universal coverage goal of nets in Yirimadjo reached!

Doctor Djoumé Diakité of Muso Ladamunen sent us this latest update on MAMA:

"The news of the recent kidnapping of tourists in Timbuktu and Hombori has of course shaken us all. We have always considered our country as an open and warm place, that welcomes all outsiders and visitors. We hope that these acts of violence will come to an end soon so that our tradition of hospitality can be preserved!

But we shouldn't forget that the insecurity is really confined to the North. Mali is a big country, twice as large as France. Here in Bamako, more than 1200 kms south of Timbuktu, there are no risks comparable to the insecurity up North. What we worry most about here are the traffic, and of course malaria and diarrhea.

We recently published our official report on the very successful mosquito net distribution campaign of this year (see: http://www.againstmalaria.com/images/00/17/17259.pdf), and I am very proud to announce that we can state that Yirimadjo is one of the first communities in Mali to complete a universal coverage bed net distribution!
In the analysis of our 2011 bednet need assessment, which surveyed each of Yirimadjo’s 11,017 households, we calculated that 22,372 additional nets were needed to protect every person in every sleeping space in Yirimadjo.

The 22,500 nets mobilized for this distribution enabled us to meet that universal coverage goal and exceed it, so that we could also protect households that had recently moved to Yirimadjo and did not participate in our initial census. Sixteen nets (0.07%) were lost in transport. We distributed 22,484 nets in total. Tens of thousands of community members now sleep safely at night, protected from malaria transmitting mosquitos. We are sharing the results of our intervention with the National Malaria Control Program to inform national efforts to fight malaria. I uploaded a short video so that you can get an impression of the crowd at one of the distribution points last August...

Now that we have rounded off the distribution campaign, we can fully focus on the mobile project. Hopefully the application will allow us to keep a good view on how the situation in the neighborhoods evolves. Are the nets used well? Do the numbers of malaria cases drop? Will we be able to tackle and ban the disease from this area?

Salut à tous,
Juste quelques mots pour vous parler de l'état actuel de la campagne pour le projet MAMMA.
La levée de fonds marche bien: en tout, vous avez fait don de presque 900 euros dans les trois dernières semaines - ce que je considère comme un bon résultat! Encore 3000 euros à mobiliser, mais je suis optimiste que cela peut être fait, si nous continuons tous à mobiliser autant de personnes que possible ... Quoi qu'il en soit, un grand merci à ceux qui ont déjà contribué !

Ensemble avec Muso Ladamunen, nous avons décidé de commencer à travailler sur le projet - même si le financement n'est pas encore complètement assuré. Ça peut constituer un risque, mais la manière modulaire dont le projet a été conçu nous permet d'aller étape par étape, et de continuer à chercher des revenus supplémentaires dans l'intervalle.

Notamment en termes de visibilité et de publicité, je pense que la campagne pour MAMMA a été très réussie jusqu'à présent.
Le journaliste malien Salif Sanogo, qui travaille maintenant à l'ambassade du Mali à Washington, a déjà promis qu'il demandera à ses anciens collègues à la télévision nationale l'ORTM de dédier un reportage au projet MAMMA dans l'émission télévisée mensuelle sur les TIC Cyber-NTIC.
Russell Southwood, dont le site web et bulletin hebdomadaire «Balancing Act» nous racontent tout sur les derniers développements en matière de téléphonie et d'Internet en Afrique, a mis en vedette un sujet sur MAMA dans la publication du 18 novembre.
Et aussi nos collègues de l'AITEC Afrique ont repéré le projet MAMMA, et nous ont demandé si nous pouvons faire une présentation lors de leur conférence AfriHealth le 30 Novembre à Nairobi, au Kenya.

Je suis allé rendre visite à Bamako Muso Ladamunen le 9 novembre dernier, et j'ai eu un bon échange avec le coordinateur Djoumé Diakité et ses collègues à Yirimadjo. Ils sont vraiment étonnés de la quantité de publicité que la campagne pour MAMMA a déjà généré et ils sentent qu'ils peuvent faire quelque chose de semblable au Mali l'année prochaine- en utilisant les médias et les artistes locaux pour défendre leur lutte contre le paludisme.

En attendant, Muso Ladamunen a bien travaillé sur les formulaires qu'ils veulent utiliser pour charger sur les téléphones portables, et ça a bonne allure. La prochaine étape consiste maintenant à développer l'application qui permettra de charger les formulaires sur les cellulaires. Une fois l'application fonctionnelle, elle sera testée sur le terrain, les téléphones seront distribués aux relais communautaires et la formation pourra commencer. Si tout se passe comme prévu, le pilote débutera en Janvier-Février. J'espère que nous serons en mesure de vous montrer quelques screenshots du logiciel une fois qu'il est opérationnel.
J'ai également visité le Centre de Santé de Yirimadjo, qui commence maintenant à intégrer les TIC dans ses activités. L'idée est que, durant 2012, le Centre va mettre en place un réseau local avec des terminaux au niveau du Bureau d'Entrées (unité d'enregistrement du patient), les trois médecins et la pharmacie - permettant ainsi de rationaliser l'enregistrement des patients, des dossiers médicaux, des médicaments et des systèmes de paiement. Une fois fonctionnel, l'application mobile de Muso Ladamunen sera intégrée dans ce «système de gestion Dispensaire», permettant aux médecins d'envoyer des rappels et des invitations à des relais de santé communautaire via le téléphone portable.

Donc dans l'ensemble, tout se passe a merveille - je suis vraiment ravi des derniers développements, et c'est pareil pour les partenaires au Mali.

Je suis vraiment désolé pour la qualité médiocre des photos - j'avais emmené ma camera pour prendre des bonnes photos lors de ma visite au Centre de Santé et aux bureaux de Muso Ladamunen, seulement pour découvrir que la batterie de mon appareil était complètement déchargée au moment suprème! J'ai donc dû me contenter de mon vieux Blackberry...

Hallo allemaal,
even over de actuele stand van het project MAMA.

De fondsenwerving gaat goed: in totaal hebben jullie meer dan 900 euro gedoneerd in de afgelopen drie weken - een geweldig resultaat! Nog 3000 euro te gaan, maar ik ben optimistisch dat dit gaat lukken, als we allemaal zo veel mogelijk mensen blijven mobiliseren... Hoe dan ook, heel veel dank aan degenen die al een bijdrage hebben geleverd!

Samen met Muso Ladamunen hebben we besloten om het project alvast op te starten - zelfs al is de financiering nog niet helemaal rond. Het kan een risico zijn, maar de modulaire manier waarop het project is ontworpen stelt ons in staat om stap voor stap op te bouwen, en ondertussen te blijven zoeken naar extra inkomsten.

Vooral op het vlak van zichtbaarheid en publiciteit denk ik dat de campagne voor MAMA tot nu toe heel succesvol is geweest. De aankondiging is de hele wereld over gegaan, en ik heb tal van positieve reacties gekregen.Goede vriend en televisie-journalist Salif Sanogo, tegenwoordig werkzaam bij de Malinese ambassade in Washington, heeft al toegezegd dat hij zijn voormalige collega's bij de staatstelevisie ORTM zal vragen om aandacht te besteden aan het MAMA project in het maandelijkse tv-programma 'Cyber-NTIC'.
Russell Southwood, die ons in zijn bulletin en website 'Balancing Act' alles vertelt over de laatste ontwikkelingen in telefonie en internet in Afrika, heeft over MAMA bericht in de editie van 18 november.

9 november was ik bezoek bij Muso Ladamunen in Bamako, en ik had een goede uitwisseling met coördinator Djoumé Diakité en zijn collega's in Yirimadjo. Ze zijn echt verbaasd over de hoeveelheid publiciteit die de MAMA-campagne al heeft gegenereerd voor hun project en ze hebben het gevoel dat ze volgend jaar misschien iets dergelijks in Mali zelf kunnen doen - met behulp van lokale media, lokale artiesten en andere vrijwilligers.

In de tussentijd heeft Muso Ladamunen gewerkt aan de formulieren die ze willen gebruiken via de mobiele telefoons, en die zien er nu prima uit. De volgende stap is nu om de java-shell te ontwikkelen waarmee de formulieren op normale mobiele telefoons gedownload gaan worden. Zodra de applicatie functioneel is, zal het eerst in het veld getest worden, zullen vervolgens de telefoons uitgedeeld worden aan de Health workers en zullen de vrouwen getraind worden. Als alles volgens plan verloopt, zal de pilot in januari-februari kunnen starten. Ik hoop dat we tegen die tijd in staat zijn om jullie enkele screenshots van de applicatie te laten zien.

Ik heb ook een bezoek gebracht aan het Gezondheidscentrum in Yirimadjo, dat nu ICT begint te integreren in z'n activiteiten. Het idee is dat het centrum in 2012 een begin maakt met het opzetten van een Local Area Network met aansluitingen op het niveau van de patiënten-registratie, de drie artsen en de apotheek - om de patiënten-registratie, de medische dossiers, de medicatie en de betalingssystenmen beter te stroomlijnen. Eenmaal functioneel zal de mobiele toepassing van Muso Ladamunen geïntegreerd worden in dit 'Dispensary Management System', waardoor de artsen ook zelf via de mobiele telefoon herinneringen en uitnodigingen zullen kunnen sturen naar de Community Health Workers.

Dus al met al staan de zaken er goed voor - ik ben echt enthousiast over de laatste ontwikkelingen, en dat geldt ook voor de partners in Mali.

Sorry trouwens voor de matige kwaliteit van de foto's - ik had mijn camera meegenomen om mooie foto's te nemen van het gezondheidscentrum en van het kantoor van Muso, maar ter plekke bleek de batterij van m'n fototoestel volledig leeg te zijn! Dus moest ik overschakelen op mijn oude Blackberry ... nou ja, het gaat om het algemene beeld.

Hi all,
Just a few words to tell you about the actual state of project MAMA.

Fund raising is going quite well: altogether, you donated more than 900 euros in the past three weeks - which I consider great! Still 3000 euros to go, but I'm optimistic that this can be done, if we all continue to mobilize as many persons as possible... Anyway, a big word of thanks to those who did already contribute!

Together with Muso Ladamunen, we decided to start work on the project - even if all funding is not secured yet. It may be a risk, but the modular way the project has been designed allows us to go step by step, and to continue to look for extra income in the meanwhile.

Especially in terms of visibility and publicity, I think the campaign for MAMA has been very successful up till now. I received lots of positive feedback - from all over the world.
Good friend Salif Sanogo, who's now working at the Malian embassy in Washington, already pledged that he will ask his former colleagues at the State television ORTM to feature the MAMA project in the monthly television show on ICT 'Cyber-NTIC'.
Russell Southwood, whose weekly bulletin and web site 'Balancing Act' tell us all about the latest developments in telephony and Internet in Africa, featured an item about MAMA in the 18 november issue/mailing.
And somehow our colleagues at AITEC Africa spotted the MAMA project, and asked us if we could do a presentation at their AfriHealth Conference on 30 November – 1 December in Nairobi, Kenya. I still have to see how to solve this, as I'm not sure that we'll be able to attend...

I went to visit Muso Ladamunen in Bamako on November 9, and I had a good exchange with coordinator Djoumé Diakité and his colleagues in Yirimadjo. They are really amazed about the amount of publicity the MAMA campaign has already generated for their project and they feel they may do something similar in Mali next year - using local media, local artists and other volunteers to advocate for their fight against malaria.

In the meanwhile, Muso Ladamunen have been working on the forms they want to use via the mobile phones, and these look quite fine now. The next step will now be to develop the java-shell which will allow the forms to be downloaded on normal cell phones. Once the application will be functional, it will be field-tested, the phones will be distributed to the community workers and training will start. If everything goes according to plan, the pilot will start in January-February. I hope we'll be able to show you some screenshots of the application once it is operational.

I also visited the Health Centre in Yirimadjo, which is now starting to integrate ICT in its operations. The idea is that during 2012, the Centre will put in place a Local Area Network with terminals at the level of the Bureau d'Entrees (patient registration unit), the three doctors and the pharmacy - thus allowing to streamline patient registration, medical files, medication and payment systems. Once functional, the mobile application of Muso Ladamunen will be integrated in this 'Dispensary Management System', allowing the doctors to send reminders and invitations to the Community Health Workers via mobile phone.
So all in all, things look quite bright - I'm really thrilled about the latest developments, and so are the partners in Mali.

And I'm really sorry about the mediocre quality of the photos - as always, I took my camera along to take great pictures from the Health Centre and from the Muso office, only to find out that my camera's battery was completely depleted on that particular visit! So I had to switch to my old Blackberry... well, you get the picture I guess...

For the project 'Mobiles against Malaria in Mali' - MAMA - of Muso Ladamunen in Yirimadjo (Bamako, Mali), we are looking for great imagery. A good logo, comic, cartoon....

That's why we're launching a little contest:

Design a logo or a cartoon or a comic strip that represents the fight against Malaria, integrating the use of mobile phone. You can use a striking image, a photo collage, a drawing, or a combination of these techniques. A bit of humor, a wink, a good metaphor - anything goes ...!

The author with the best contribution will receive an IICD USB-stick of 2 Gb - and of course eternal fame, as we will post the results on all media and social networks of IICD and Muso Ladamunen. And who knows, the image will also become the logo for the MAMA project.

C’est pourquoinous lançons un petit concours :

Désignez un logo ouun cartoon ou une bande dessinée qui représente la lutte contre le pallud en y intégrantla téléphonie mobile. Vous pouvez utiliser une image frappante, un collage dephotos, un dessin ou un ensemble de ces techniques. Un brin d’humour, un clin d’œil,un bon métaphore – tout est permis… !

L’auteur/trice dela meilleure contribution recevra une clé USB IICD de 2 Giga – et bien sur la notoriétééternelle, car nous publierons le résultat sur tous les medias et réseauxsociaux d’IICD et de Muso Ladamunen. Et qui sait, l’image deviendra aussi l’affichedu projet MAMMA.

Projet MAMMA se met en route!

Le projet MAMMA -"Mamans et Mobiles contre le Malaria au Mali" commence à prendre bien forme.

Il s'agit d'un effort de renforcement des collectivités dans Yirimadjo, un faubourg très pauvre de la capitale Bamako, dont mon organisation IICD soutient un élément en santé communautaire. Nous aidons l'organisation locale Muso Ladamunen à combattre le paludisme et la diarrhee dans le quartier en intégrant la téléphonie mobile dans le travail des travailleurs bénévoles de la santé communautaire.
Environ 60 femmes, la plupart des mères qui vivent à Yirimadjo, se sont organisées pour effectuer des visites régulières aux familles dans les différents quartiers du faubourg. Cela leur permet de faire le point sur les conditions de vie de ces ménages, et d'identifier personnes potentiellement à risque (femmes enceintes, jeunes-nés, etc.). Elles sensibilisent les femmes sur leurs droits, distribuent des moustiquaires à des familles dans le besoin, prennent des tests rapides sur le paludisme si elles détectent des personnes qui souffrent de fièvre, et facilitent l'accès au centre de santé local. Dans les trois dernières années, ces bénévoles courageux ont sauvé des centaines de vies, et le nombre de consultations au Centre de Santé de Yirimadjo a triplé.

Distribution de moustiquaires, Aout 2011

L'été dernier, quand je leur ai rendu visite à Bamako, elles étaient en train de distribuer 20.000 moustiquaires à des familles cibles identifiées dans le quartier. Le 'capitaine' des femmes bénévoles, Mah Cissé, me raconta qu'elles sont encore aux prises avec l'identification correcte et opportune des familles ciblées, et elle m'a demandé de les aider à intégrer la téléphonie mobile dans leur travail. Cela permettrait aux bénévoles d'envoyer des données sur les ménages directement dans une base de données et de géo-localiser plus précisément les domaines de Yirimadjo qui sont le plus à risque. De plus, les téléphones mobiles seraient également utilisés pour envoyer des alertes et des rappels sur les visites de consultation aux travailleurs de la santé dans les quartiers.

Nous sommes en train de finaliser la conception du projet de «Mamans et Mobiles contre le Malaria au Mali», et nous espérons être en mesure de commencer dans les prochains mois. En cas de succès, nous pensons que ce projet pilote pourra être étendu à de nombreuses autres communautés au Mali (et au-delà). Muso Ladamunen aussi bien qu'IICD ont investi de l'argent dans le projet, et «La Parade» (un festival de théâtre néerlandais) a soulevé 6.083 euros supplémentaires. Il nous manque actuellement encore 3.500 euros pour couvrir tous les frais du projet.

MAMA project about to start!

MAMA in Mali

MAMA - Mobiles Against Malaria - is a community building effort in one of the very poor outskirts of the Malian capital Bamako, Yirimadjo. My organisation IICD wants to help the local association Muso Ladamunen combat the main diseases malaria and diarrhoe in the neighbourhood via the integration of mobiles phones in the work of voluntary Community Health Workers.

Approximately 60 women, most mothers who live in Yirimadjo, have organized themselves to pay regular visits to families in the different neighbourhoods of Yirimadjo. This allows them to take stock of the living conditions of these households, and to identify potential women and children at risk (pregnant women, young-borns etc.). They sensitize women about their rights, distribute moskito nets to families in need, take rapid tests on malaria if they detect people who suffer of fever, and facilitate access to the local Health Centre when necessary. In the past three years, these courageous Health Workers have saved hundreds of lifes, and the number of consultations at the Health Centre has tripled.

Last summer, when I visited them in Bamako, they were distributing 20.000 moskito nets to identified target families in Yirimadjo. The ‘captain’ of the Health workers, Mah Cissé, also told me that they are still struggling with the correct and timely identification of target families, and she asked me if we could help them to integrate an element of mobile phones in their work. This would allow the Health workers to send household data directly to a database and to geo-localize more exactly which areas of Yirimadjo are more at risk. Additionally, the mobile phones would also be used to send alerts and reminders about consultation visits to the Health workers in the neighbourhoods.

We are now finalizing the project design of ‘MAMA – Mobiles Against Malaria in Mali’ , and we hope to be able to start with the mobile phones in december. If successful, this pilot could be extended to many other communities in Mali (and beyond). Both Muso Ladamunen and IICD have invested money in the project, and ‘De Parade’ (a dutch theatre festival) has raised an additional 6.083 euros, for which we are very grateful. But we still can use a little more help to get it really going.

Campagne voor MAMA gestart

Het is bijna zover. Het project MAMA (Mobiles Against Malaria) gaat hopelijk in december 2011 van start. We hebben nog niet alle fondsen binnen, maar met het huidige budget kan alvast begonnen worden met het ontwikkelen van de mobiele applicatie die de vrijwillige gezondheidswerkers in Yirimadjo het werk moet vergemakkelijken.

Het gaat om het gemeenschapsinitiatief ‘Muso Ladamunen’ in Yirimadjo, een van de armste randgemeentes van Bamako, de hoofdstad van Mali. Mijn organisatie IICD wil Muso Ladamunen helpen om malaria en diarree de buurt uit te bannen – met behulp van mobiele telefoons. Ongeveer 60 vrouwen, allemaal moeders die zelf in Yirimadjo wonen, hebben zich georganiseerd om regelmatig families in de wijken te bezoeken. Dit stelt hen in staat om de leefomstandigheden van deze huishoudens in kaart te brengen, en diegenen die extra gevaar lopen (zwangere vrouwen, pasgeborenen, etc.) te identificeren. Ze lichten vrouwen voor over hun rechten, distribueren muskietennetten, doen snelle tests op malaria als ze mensen met koortsverschijnselen zien, en ze vergemakkelijken de gang naar het lokale gezondheidscentrum. In de afgelopen drie jaar hebben deze vrouwen het aantal consultaties bij het gezondheidscentrum helpen verdrievoudigen, en tientallen levens gered.

Toen ik ze afgelopen zomer bezocht in Bamako waren zij bezig met de distributie van 20.000 muskietennetten aan gezinnen in Yirimadjo. De 'kapitein' van de gezondheidswerkers, Mah Cissé, vertelde me dat ze nog steeds worstelen met de juiste en tijdige identificatie van de doelgroep-gezinnen, en ze vroeg me of we hen konden helpen om mobiele telefoons te integreren in hun werk. Dit stelt de gezondheidswerkers in staat om gegevens direct naar een database te sturen en helpt de organisatie om nauwkeuriger vast te stellen welke wijken meer risico lopen. En het helpt Muso Ladamunen om zijn pleidooien voor sanitaire aanpassingen (aanleg riolering, dempen van waterplassen, etc.) beter te onderbouwen. Bovendien kunnen de mobiele telefoons ook worden gebruikt om waarschuwingen en herinneringen over consultaties aan de gezondheidswerkers in de wijken te sturen.

We hopen nu op korte termijn te kunnen starten met MAMA. Als het project succesvol verloopt, zal het waarschijnlijk worden uitgebreid naar andere gemeenten in Mali (en daarbuiten). Zowel Muso Ladamunen als IICD hebben geld in het project geïnvesteerd, en theaterfestival 'De Parade' heeft nog eens 6.083 euro ingezameld, waarvoor we zeer dankbaar zijn. Maar we kunnen nog steeds een beetje extra hulp gebruiken!
